Half a Million and Counting

Since I didn’t have anything else to blog about, I figure I’d brag about my soldering video on YouTube (again).

I had intended to publicize it when the video surpassed 500,000 views, but I missed the occasion and by the time I realized the mark had come and gone.  It now has over 530,000 views.

The video seems firmly entrenched as the second-most viewed soldering video on YouTube; the front runner has been holding his +20,000 view differential for a while.

As I mentioned before I made the video for family and friends and never anticipated it would be as widely viewed as it has been.

I’ve gotten repeated critical comments for my solder “flicking” and pronunciation of the word “solder”.  Americans say it without the “L”, but I’ve long since given up trying to explain that point.

(In retrospect I should have also used a new/clean soldering iron tip for the video as the one in it is pretty gnarly.)

A while ago, Kevin, a friend from work, predicted that the soldering video would eventually surpass the “Catcher Drills Batter in Head With Ball” video that Break.com eventually bought from me.  At the time I wasn’t so sure, but it now seems pretty obvious that his prediction will eventually come true.

It only took about six months for the baseball video to get 500,000 views, and it has taken a little less than three years for the soldering video to reach that milestone.  But it appears this is a case of the tortoise and the hare: the baseball video now has 625,000+ views but has since faded into obscurity whereas the soldering video continues to rack up views.

YouTube offered me revenue sharing on the soldering video because of its popularity some time ago, but as the video contains copyrighted music I’m not able to accept.

(20 geek points if you can name where the music in the soldering video came from.)
